Take from me the crown of sympathy...

The best 3 black metal albums

Discuss other bands, doom metal or otherwise, here.

Postby Iceddawn » Tue May 29, 2007 10:52 pm

I have a very good friend of mine who is a big fan of black metal music, just like me. When we get drunk together we always start to discuss which are the best BM albums ever. Well, these conversations never take too long, cause our opinions never change. :)
He always votes on: Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Naglfar - Diabolical

IMO the best 3 BM albums are the following:
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Naglfar - Vittra
(maybe one day i'm gonna switch one of these to Keep of Kalessin - Armada, cause i really love that too)

As i could see there are many people here who like black metal, so i'm just curious. What do you think about this? Which are you favourite black metal albums?

1.EMPEROR - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
2.SATYRICON - Nemesis Divina
3.ARCTURUS - Aspera Hiems Symfonia

I'm not really into black metal that much, but these 3 kick ass !

Maybe a silly question but are Enslaved blackmetal?

It's not a silly question, because they started off as viking metal, I think, but what I have heard sounds like bm, and not what I think of when someone says viking metal to me today. But the newer... Progressive bm? I don't know what to call it. It's fantastic nevertheless. What do you think of when you say black metal? Would you go as far as to include Dimmu as a bm-band (newer stuff)? Armada and Nattens Madrigal is quite different as well. Well, if we include everything my list will be like this:

Ulver - Bergtatt
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal (yeah, I love Ulver :P)
Keep of Kalessin - Reclaim (yeah, yeah, I know it's an EP, but it deserves the place)

(Notice, this is what I think at the moment, and it may change)

I used to be very deep in Black Metal, but I'm not recently, but I guess that it's really hard to mention only three albums. Let my try...

1. Gorgoroth - Antichrist
2. Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
3. Dark Funeral - Sectets of the Black Arts

cheers ;)

I've heard a lot of BM songs but not too many full albums.
So here's my list:

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Burzum - Det Som En Gang Var
Lord Belial - Kiss the Goat

Thats about all full BM albums I've heard

Sorry, I have to list four :)

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Arcturus - Aspera Heims Sympfonia
Borknager - Empiricism

and my personal favorite of all Sigh, Scorn Defeat, Hail Horror Hail and Ghastly Funeral Theatre (early Sigh)

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice
Burzum - Hyvis Lysett Tar Oss
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

This was a hard decision for me, but these three first come to mind.

Satyricon - Nemesis Divina ( but I like the whole discography )

Mercyful Fate- Don't Break The Oath

Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli ( I know this splits opinions but I like this new one )

I really miss all the Mayhem and Emperor albums... ... have to purchase a few of them asap. I got used to them.

Finnish ug bm band Urn is also good. Been listening their album Dawn of the Devastation recently. Archgoat is also great.

Only three?! Well, I'll give it a try:

Ulver - Bergtatt <3
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina (It could as well have been Dark Medieval Times or The Shadowthrone, but I'll let it win because of Mother North)
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon

Ok, who am I kidding :P
Mayhem - De Mysteriis dom Sathanas
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky

I've only heard this album three/four times, but with its excellence, I'm sure Peste Noire's Sanie des Siècles... will be on my top list soon.
