The best 3 black metal albums

I know very little about classic black metal. I've fallen in love with some of the new experimentally-type black metal that's cropping-up (Wolves in the Throne Room, Cobalt, Altar of Plagues - to name a few) and I think it's about time for me to explore the genre's past...

My favorite BM album at the moment (bearing in mind my lack of knowledge here) is Diadem of 12 Stars by Wolves in the Throne Room. It's absolutely spellbinding.

You can, of course :) Those Emperor albums are at the top of my list. I recently ripped a friend's Burzum Anthology CD to my PC, but I've yet to give it a listen. Will do soon!

And, to those who haven't heard it, I can't recommend the aforementioned Wolves in the Throne Room album, Diadem of 12 Stars, strongly enough. It is a thing of majestic beauty.

I have yet to get into black metal. I like the idea that it is atmospheric and dark but the music just doesnt grab me that much. I'm giving it another chance though, my friend let me borrow Stormblast because he says it kind of has some doom elements to it.

If you're interested in doom influenced black metal I'd recommend checking out Bethlehem, Forgotten Tomb and Barathrum. Might be worth you checking out Gallhammer too, though I don't really like them :P

Wolves in the Throne Room are fantastic, one of my favourite BM bands at the moment along with Ceremonial Castings (who are also DEFINITELY worth checking out if you haven't listened to them before).

:( Gallhammer are amazing in my opinion, if you've only heard Speed Of Blood then please give them another listen as that song sucks balls but its the only one anyone seems to have heard, songs to listen to by them would be The Onset Of The Age Of Despair, Ripper In The Gloom and World To Be Ashes.

Indeed, Landfermann´s voice is wicked. The whole album is sick, no other band will ever come close.

Dragged into Sunlight is a cool doomed-out black metal band. Their first full-length was supposed to be out last year but seems to have had a load of delays.

Altar of Plagues' latest album has a nice bit of doom in it. Nathan from Graves at Sea does guest vox too.

I adore WitTR. Have yet to hear Black Cascade though.

Thanks, I must check out that Ceremonial Castings band :) Have never heard of them before.

For those who haven't read the Profound Lore thread, I highly recommend checking-out Cobalt. Savage black metal with what seems like a punk influence.

I'd say:

In The Nightside Eclipse - Emperor
The Principle of Evil Made Flesh - Cradle of Filth (say what you will, it's a black metal album!)
Frost - Enslaved

Disclaimer, as some black metal purists can get very agitated about ... everything: THESE ARE MY FAVOURITE BLACK METAL ALBUMS, I'M NOT SAYING THEY ARE THE UNIVERSAL "BEST"
