Post count

Remarks, suggestions for improvements and questions about the web forum.

Lot's of forums do not take post counts from so called spam-threads, like "what are you listening to?" or "random jokes". At least the "what are you listening to?" thread here is the only one with over 300 pages, and I have the feeling that some post there mainly to increase their post count, that makes a wrong motivation for posting. (I can see on my own statistic that over 15% of my total posting is from that thread, and I'm sure others have more...).

What about removing post count from that thread? I guess it's possible?

Edit: Maybe not a bad idea to remove it on the "Latest thoughts" thread as well?

I totally agree with Les Ténèbres. Even though I posted a lot on these spam threads ( What are you listenning to ? + Latest thoughts ) before, I try now to minimize my posts on those topics. Post count should only be reserved for the My Dying Bride, Metal and other music, Art, litterature and philosophy sections.

Some on the board post far too much on those threads and that's not something bad in itself but those posts should really not be counted in the total number of posts. I will be in favor of this good idea.

Can you just imagine that some "doomsters" are only posting in the general chat board ? :?
Post count should be a way for everyone to know who makes this board living; not only who is the best spammer...

I'll have a look but to be honest I don't think I can easily "exclude" these threads from the post count. I'll see what I can find out though.

My personal opinion is: I don't care about the post count. At all.
If it was up to me it could be removed as a whole. It's not something I am suggesting, though, since I know there are people who enjoy that sort of information.

There are different reasons people sign up on a forum. Naturally, people will have different opinions on what is interesting and what not.

I guess your intention is to decrease "spam". Are you sure the amount will really be reduced and not just spread out to "not so obvious spam topics"? I much rather have a few places where people who actually care about their number of posts can boost their post count instead of the same people "contributing" to each and every topic in order to get their numbers up.
However, if your experience is that it does reduce the amount of post count boosting it could be worth a try.

Another problem is how to decide which topics are going to be reduced to "spam topics". And who is going to decide? If you think about it for a while I'm sure you'll see the kind of troubles that comes with the approach.

The way I see it it's up to J1 to check if it's possible and then to decide if it's worth the trouble.

...but since there are no wild protests I assume there is nobody opposing... ?

With all this being said, if you all think this important, go for it.
I will neither try to stop nor support you. :D

I agree - who to choose? It's up to J1.

I understand these on forums where you actually achieve areas with more privacy the more you write. I honestly don't care even a bit about post count.

I don't see any point in taking any measures to reduce spammer's post counts.

And yes, I know I have a huge post count, but I honestly don't care about it either way.

I think J1 is waiting for some more opinions before taking a decision :smug:

Well, to be honest, it's not that important to me either. I just wanted to make the proposal and see what happened.

Well, since it's not important to anyone and it is a lot of work for me to do something about this, I hope you'll forgive me for not putting too much energy into this right now ;)

I agree - pointless exercise. It'll make no real difference to anyone's life, except give poor J1 a headache.

Edit: haha just saw I replied to something nearly a year old

That would be fair though...I feel like an advanced spammer, 67% of posts in General Chat!.. I'll try to reform though... :shame:

Of abhorrent Life, is waiting
Sweet Oblivion, culminating
All the years of fruitless quest.

This is a good statistical figure indeed.
