Thought it might be nice to have a bunch of the band's interviews (-and no, I didn't read all of these). :wink:

I just rediscovered two old interviews on HD, however these are not online anymore. I'll post the shortest here then:

Interview: Emanzipation Magazine no. 4

I don't think I'm wrong when claiming MY DYING BRIDE have been obvious role models for numerous other doom/death metal bands. When they released their debut album back in '92, noone had ever heard such gloomy, gothic and at the same time wonderful and poetic music. Back in my first issue I made an interview with the band and nearly three years later I thought it had become relevant to do so once again. I wasn't able to be at present at the interview myself, so I prepared some questions and asked my old pal Carsten Holm to ask them for me. Martin (violin) and frontman/vocalist Aaron answered...

BOB DYLAN
- "When we were a death band I just screamed out everything. Now some of the stuff we do is so extremely slow, doomy and atmospheric and it just seemed pointless screaming over it, destroying all the atmosphere with some cheasy DM vocals, so I tried to make my voice fit more with this style of music, but the growls will always be there in the faster stuff, because it's always good to scream your head off in the really aggressive parts."
Aaron's vocals surely have improved quite a bit. He can actually sing nowadays, so some might think he has been taking some lessons.

- "I haven't been taking any lessons and I'm actually not a particular good singer, but as long as Bob Dylan is still alive then I can sing, hahaha!"

Nowadays there's not hardly one death metal release without some sort of normal singing and that reason alone makes one think that it has become quite a trend to sing with your normal vocals in a brutal band.

- "Well, after a few years you realize that the other guys in the band are getting better and better and you wanna improve as well, so it's just a natural progress when brutal vocalists start using their normal vocals, too."

THE BIGGEST CROWD EVER
- "The people who come to see our shows are basically your average crowd, but we are also seeing a lot of older folks showing up nowadays. They must have heard the new album and liked it."
- "We have had people say they hated DM but they do like some of the songs on the new album. So the older audience is showing up for the slower songs and the kids are showing up for the faster songs. That's great, 'coz then we are getting a bigger crowd than we had before. It's not always funny playing live and especially not for a band like MY DYING BRIDE, 'coz their music tend to be very slow at times."

- "It's a struggle when people are standing with their arms folded, because you automatically think the audience don't enjoy it and start to not enjoy it yourself. If you see the crowd jumping up and down then you feel great and you get more into it. But when they stand still you think: "Ohh no, here we go again." I know some people think our music is boring, but even some of the long songs, on 12 or 13 minutes get so boring at all. But people who like fast stuff all the time should look after another band!"

OTHER TALENTS
Often big artists have other talents, too and that's also the case with Aaron, because besides singing he's also a great art worker which he has shown quite a lot on MY DYING BRIDE's own material.
- "It's just a hobby. I don't get payed for it, that's for sure! David McKean did the stuff on our first releases and I loved his style. After he had made the artwork for our first album a lot of other bands wanted to use him, among others Paradise Lost, Kreator, Epidemic & Cerebral Fix... everybody started using him! So the price for his work went up as well. I mean, the first cover we got for like 400 pounds and when we asked him again it was something like 4000 pounds and we said forget it!"

- "And since I had loved hid work for so long and sort of knew how to do it, I just tried to see if it would work out. The first thing I did was the "Thrash Of Naked Limbs" ep and everybody liked it, so I did it on "Turn Loose The Swans" & the "I Am The Bloody Earth" ep, too."

BLACK GOD
On "Turn Loose The Swans" there is a song called "Black God". A quite strange title I think, so I let Aaron explain who we are dealing with.
- "Who isn't he... or she? It's not a racist song, it's kind of a strange one. Most people assume God is an old man with a white beard sitting in heaven. And I just thought... why a white man? Why up there? And why not down here or over there?"

- "So I said to myself, why not call it "Black God" to get some some people pissed. And a lot of people hate that title and a lot of people think it's good. Some people think it's satanic, because they say that the black God is the devil. Other people say it's racism. They say like: "God is black, are you mad or something?"

PISSED ON PARADISE LOST
Most bands have some other bands they are in particulary good contacts with and of course MY DYING BRIDE aren't any different. But it seemed like a question they weren't prepared to answer.
- "We don't really know that many bands personally, only a few local ones like Decomposed and we also know Bolt Thrower and Cathedral, 'coz we've played with them a lot of times."

- "We mentioned quite a few on the thanks list on "Turn Loose..." but it's far from all of them we really know."

- "Me and Andrew did an interview on a Belgium radio last year and we were really drunk and we took the piss out of every band, especially Paradise Lost. We were calling them fucking shit, just for fun. And after we had heard the show we said ohh no!!!"

- "We had been travelling all day. We left England at four in the morning and of course we got drunk like idiots on the ferry and this interview was at 11 o'clock in the night and at that time we were totally pissed. When the interviewer asked if there were any bands we hated we just mentioned tons of names. And after we had heard the tape we were nearly suicidal. We even slagged off Hammy of Peaceville, even though he was there. And at the end of the interview we started punching eachother."

ONLY 4 HOURS A WEEK
A lot of bands are working and sweating like pigs in their rehearsal rooms to get their songs as tight and great as possible. MY DYING BRIDE's music tend to be very complicated in some of the parts and they are including tons of strange stuff, but strangely enough rehearsing isn't something they take too seriously.
- "We only practise 4 hours a week which is shit. Y'know, we're supposed to be a professional band. I write the lyrics in one night and the guys practise at home and then we usually come together on a Tuesday or a Wednesday night and everyone comes with what they've got and then we can write a song in two days, which is really quick, I think."

- "But after you have written it, it's far from finished, 'coz then you add a little bit and you take away a little bit. It's nevcer perfect until you record it in the studio. Then you can also add all kinds of strange things which isn't possible in the rehearsel room."

SEX SYMBOLS
Since a great part of Aaron's lyrics deal with sex themes I thought it would be cool to get to know which sex symbols he has, but the lyrics must be his own experience 'coz we answered this way:
- "Ehhh... I don't know! Linda Owen maybe! I like funny actors but they aren't exactly my sex symbols. I honestly don't know!"

That was all the intelligent words these two Englishmen had to say! The conversation continued a little longer, but the topics that were discussed wouldn't be that interesting to read about! New stuff from MY DYING BRIDE should already have seen the light of day now (these guys are quick!)

Well, it was a very instructive interview and I was really happy to hear the whole explanation about the forthcoming album.

Nothing is planned; I generally fall about the place in tears and often hold back from actually hurting myself or causing great physical harm. It's a very uncomfortable place to be for me. With my eyes closed I can almost see unholy melancholy and utter deprivation laid bare before me, pouring down onto me and crushing my spirit.

And that was an intesting anwswer, I like it.

BTDH: I'm assuming that when this album is released there will be a tour
in support of it. Will My Dying Bride make it to the US? I know the band
hasn't performed here in years…
Aaron: We'll do our very best to make it back to the States. We loved it last time (supporting Dio) and can't really
understand why we haven't been back. I do apologize.

US fans have now good hope to see the band soon, I believe.

And yes, I believe they do all have regular jobs. They probably make very little from CD sales now, so I don't think they could live off the band alone.

No. I seem to remember Aaron saying that they try to keep it a secret as it would be bad for the image that they've built up over the years! I don't think it would mae any difference to me - having met three of them, I know how 'normal' and down to earth they are.

Yeah, yeah, you probably right. After all, that's none of our business to know that, but still... I'm all the more intrigated now ! :smug:

I guess everyone in the band must try to get vacation at the same time, if they want to tour. Should be pretty difficult I guess..

But I think it's better this way. If a band isn't dependent on financial success, they don't have to tour all the time to make ends meet. Like Paradise Lost for example. I have a lot of respect for these guys; they work their asses off, but I think it affects the quality of their music. And of their concerts.

As far as I know they've never ever been a professional band in the sene that they were able to be full-time musicians.

Actually, there was a brief period where the members of MDB (myself included) were lucky enough to be able to make a living (though a very meagre one) from music. This period didn't last long!

Although i'm aware of what the guys actually do to earn a living, it is, without a doubt, not something that should concern anyone else.

Looking forward to hearing the new record!

About the interview, I don't like the global tone given by the use of direct speech everytime. Plus the question are so common...
However, the answer about A Chapter In Loathing kind of surprised me. I couldn't imagine that Aaron asked to create this kind of old style doom/death songs. Thought it could be more Hamish or Andrew... So I was quite happy to read that.

And about the 20th anniversary, I hope they will do a tour like Metallica, playing their entire first album

It's a great piece of art, I would never have guessed he uses Fluffy as a model, that beast on the cover looks terrifying..those eyes...very disturbing.
I'm glad it was a dog though and not a goldfish.

Oh and did you notice Aaron mentions March 2012 for the next My Dying Bride album...that's not that far away. Extremely curious what we will be getting next.

Lol. But Hamish' dog does has got an odd nose though. A crossbreed perhaps?

And indeed Aaron mentions March, but a Pavlov reaction automatically tells me they probably need a couple of months more.

He's talking about a gig in Slovenia, they come backstage after the show, a sexless person appears, looking menacing and went to sit down at Aaron's feet and just staring at him. There was a menacing feel to it, they still don't know what it was all about. They've had things thrown at them like bottles and Italian coins.

Andrew says people have suggested this but Andrew thinks MDB is a metal band, especially live. It is really hard to figure out what Andrew is talking about here, but it sounds as if he is saying that the band has been offered, by promoters, to do shows with a symphonic orchestra to back them up "in Romania or Bulgaria". But I am not sure!

For Lies I Sire, because it sounds too polished

He still thinks the songs are good, though, it was more about the production-side of things. When I said I agreed so much I was perhaps overly enthusiastical because I think Lies is stronger than 34.788%...Complete, I meant I agree about the production of Lies being weak.

Agreed, there's something about the violin. I really like "Fall with Me" the best on that album. I love "My Body, a Funeral" too, but I can't shake the feeling it should have been part of a longer, epic song - it has always felt to me as if it is missing a brutal front-end. Perhaps because, as always, the band decided to put the odd song out first on the album

Seriously, what's with this band and giving a listener the wrong impression of the general sound of an album?
As the Flower Withers begins with an intro - fair enough, intros are usually different, but the first real track "Sear Me" is quite different from the rest of the album.
Turn Loose the Swans opens with "Sear Me MCMXIII" (sorry if I got the numerals wrong), which is completely different musically (still gives off the right vibe, though).
The Angel and the Dark River opens with "The Cry of Mankind" which features the unusual idea of having a melody run through its entire length (plus its twice as long as the other songs, and has a few other features that make it stand out from the rest).
34.788%...Complete...I'm surprised it doesn't open with "Heroin Chic", but on this album every song is a bit of odd while "The Whore..." is perhaps the closest to "regular Bride", so it's odd in that sense.
The Light.. begins with "She is the Dark" which is quite unconventional with verses that are played on one guitar string (unless I'm mistaken!). Awesome song, though - I'm maybe going to sing/growl it at a local band-get-together later this year.
The Dreadful Hours opens with a long, quiet intro before giving us an epic with enormous contrasts but I don't think it is the strangest tune on the album ("The Raven and the Rose" wins that honor) so this album breaks the norm.
Songs of Darkness... opens with an almost funeral-doom like dirge, it is a song that is quite different from not only the rest of the album but from the rest of their discography. A unique and haunting piece.
A Line of Deathless Kings opens with the amazing "To Remain Tombless" which is odd in the sense that it is musically quite a catchy, almost rockin' number. The main riff could almost have been on an early Metallica album. How I love the chorus..
For Lies has the aforementioned "ballad" opening the show, and A Map opens with a song that has a weird structure going on and also feels quite different from the rest of the album's slower music.
And now we have "And My Father Left Forever", which, according to the rumors, is quite different from the rest of Feel the Misery

I love them for their unconventional choices. :devilsign:

Aaron seemed still really please with how Peaceville always left so much freedom to the writting process and the release date of new albums. Great to hear such rare treatment those days.

Nice to know also that the future album will feature a lot of Calvin, despite his very little contribution in Feel The Misery.

Interesting information about the artistically love Aaron has for stain windows and how it influences the artwork of FTM.

I'm curious on what in the ITW makes you feel it is Andy. I read specifically this passage:

I was actually at work on the phone, the lyrics started to come in, they just started appearing in my head, and to add insult to injury the melody for them was there too. I was desperate to get this person off of the phone, so while trying to be polite and attentive to the caller I was frantically scribbling down the lyrics and trying to remember the melody they came with which by sheer god knows what fit the riff I had been struggling to find a home for. Not at all what you might expect but there I was minutes later in our car park singing the melody into my mobile phone of all things with the new lyrics I had just received.

For me, it is clearly Aaron that sings and writes in the band.

I read a lot. I also transport slaves, guns and drugs throughout the known galaxy in my spare time. I just bought a Lakon Type-6 transporter and I am now making some decent credits. It’s also tooled up for mining which is pretty cool but a bugger when bounced out of supercruise as it’s undergunned so got to be careful.

Andrew Craighan: We’re seriously looking into Australia (again) for definite and we are presently preparing a small European tour for 2016, amongst some rather top level festivals. To be honest gigging is the only part of My Dying Bride we have no real control over. We can only go when the time and opportunity arise. And as much as we get lots of emails saying, “play here or there, you would sell the place out” the reality is the local promoters (quite wisely) don’t always agree and we can’t force that issue.

In this particular one, I was surprised by this quote:

My body is not yet tatooed with the lyrics (I doubt it ever will be) but I love to read well-written dark litterature and how it mixes mythological elements, old legend combined with a touch of realism.

That was an interesting interview, thanks for the link. I love reading about Aaron's writing process and thoughts. Wish he did explain the title of The Angel and the Dark River a little more, always wondered about that title (I am also reminded of some party back in the day where I, drunk beyond nice, forced everyone to listen to the whole album; this was a party with not a metalhead in sight).

I agree with Aaron's opinion of "The Prize of Beauty", amazing piece of work that feels so epic despite being relatively short.
